Patient Transport Service

Booking non-urgent ambulances for transport to hospital appointments:

West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) provide a non-emergency patient transport service to those patients deemed eligible (patients with medical and/or mobility conditions that prevents them from using other forms of transport) who are attending for treatment at NHS funded treatment centres.

Patients must contact the Ambulance Service direct and will be guided through a few simple questions to determine whether you are eligible for ambulance transport and if so, your mobility needs, ensuring the appropriate type of resource is booked.  Department of Health guidelines state that a clinical need for treatment does not imply a medical need for transport.

If you do not have access to a car, public transport should always be the first option available to you.  If you cannot afford public transport, your treatment centre may have a supported travel costs scheme.  Please ask for details at your treatment centre.  If you are a regular user of public transport services, or you are able to travel independently, this should be your first port of call.

To contact the Patient Transport Service please ring 0345 425 0050 (local call rate).

Please read the Patient Transport Service Information Leaflet for further details

Community Transport Schemes:

There are community transport schemes available such as Dial-A-Ride and the Shuttle Bus Service provided by Cheshire West & Chester Council. There is also Chester Community Car Scheme and Cheshire Voluntary Car Scheme.
